Imagine a Welcoming Nest

A new bird has arrived. Can you imagine a place where it feels at home?

Ages 4–8 · 15–20 min · With a grown-up

You’ll need
Paper · colouring pencils

Let’s draw
A child draws an imaginary bird home with a nest, shelter and leafy branch, using colouring pencils.

Your mission

  1. Meet your visitor

Invent a bird and draw it. Is it big or tiny? Does it like quiet corners or lots of company?

What might your bird need after a long journey?

  2. Draw a cosy home

Draw an imaginary nest. Add somewhere to rest and shelter from the weather. Choose one special detail just for your visitor.

A shady leaf? A soft corner? You decide.

  3. Welcome them in

Show your drawing to a grown-up. Pretend your bird has just arrived and give it a tour of its new home.

What would you say to help someone new feel welcome?

One question to wonder about

What helps you feel welcome somewhere new?

A little tip for grown-ups

Ask your child to explain one choice in their drawing. Then wonder whether a different visitor might want something different. Keep it curious, with no perfect nest or right answer.

This is an imaginary drawing activity. If you spot real birds, watch from a safe distance and leave their nests undisturbed.
