Take a Colour Walk

How many surprising colours are hiding right where you are?

Ages 4–8 · 10–15 min · With a grown-up

You’ll need
Paper · colouring pencils · a grown-up

Let’s explore
A green leaf, yellow flower and blue cup sit beside a child’s matching pencil drawings for a colour hunt.

Your mission

  1. Pick your colours

Choose three pencil colours. Make a little mark for each on your paper. Hunt for colours indoors or on a walk with a grown-up.

Which colour will be hardest to find?

  2. Look a little closer

Find something that matches each colour. Notice a tiny detail: a pattern on a leaf, a bright door or a mark on a favourite cup.

Can you find two different shades of the same colour?

  3. Draw your discoveries

Draw one thing for each colour. Show your grown-up your favourite discovery. If you want, tell them how you feel now.

There is no right colour for a feeling.

One question to wonder about

What did you notice that you hadn’t seen before?

A little tip for grown-ups

Follow your child’s pace. Let them choose what to notice and whether to talk about feelings. They do not need to feel calmer afterwards; noticing, drawing or quietly spending time together is enough.

Stay with a grown-up outdoors. Look without touching unfamiliar plants or picking things up. You can play entirely at home and stop whenever you like.
